Olympiakos FC sign Spaniard Michel as new head coach

The Spaniard was presented at a press conference on Wednesday

Newsroom September 21 05:05

The owner and President of Olympiakos FC, Vangelis Marinakis officially presented at a press conference on Wednesday the club’s new head coach, Spaniard Míchel, who is returning to the Greek champions after he was at the helm from 2013 to 2015.

Yesterday it was communicated that the Spaniard travelled to Greece to finalise the necessary paperwork before the announcement could be made official.

Olympiakos chose to part ways with compatriot Carlos Corberán, who only managed to win two games out of a possible five in the Super League this season. The Greek champions find themselves fifth in the standings, seven points below league leaders and archrivals Panathinaikos.

The Greek side will not be unfamiliar territory for Míchel, having already managed Olympiacos between 2013 and 2015. During his first spell with the club, he won the Greek Super League twice and the Greek Super League once.

This will be the 59-year-old’s first club following his dismissal from Getafe in October 2021 after only picking up one point in the first eight games of the 2021-2022 La Liga season.

The Real Madrid legend will have the opportunity to work with former Los Blancos players Marcelo and James Rodríguez.

“I took on a huge responsibility, but I’m happy to be back at Olympiakos”, the Spaniard said during his presentation.
