Nationwide 24-hour-strike in Greece over fatal train crash

The main strike will take place on Thursday

Newsroom March 15 12:12

Media in Greece are taking part in the nationwide 24-hour strike starting on Wednesday following the decision by the Journalists’ Union of the Athens Daily Newspapers (ESIEA) and will culminate on Thursday when all the countries’ major unions will stop working.

The unions demand that the real culprits responsible for the fatal train crash in Larissa be identified and brought to justice and that all necessary safety measures be taken so that Greece mourns no other victims.

In the 24-hour strike over the Larissa train crash at Tempi announced by GSEE, the Greek Civil Servants Trade Unions (ADEDY), and EKA for Thursday (16/3) bus, metro, electric, and tram workers will participate in work stoppages.

In particular, the buses will stop from the start of traffic until 9:00 am. and from 21:00 until the end of traffic.

Also, to facilitate participation in the strike rallies, the tram and trains on Lines 1, 2, and 3 of the Metro will run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Itineraries will be carried out on the lines assigned to KTEL as normal. The OASA Workers’ Union states “the national tragedy in Tempe has brought us all face to face with issues of inadequate security to an extent that touch on the pathogenicity” and demands “safe, modern, quality communications with respect for human life”.

At the same time, the General Confederation of Greek Workers (G.S.E.E.) also declared their participation in the 24-hour strike declared for Thursday, March 16, 2023. On the day of the 24-hour strike of the workers at OASTH, 50 buses with security personnel will be in circulation, while the routes of the night line of the Airport (N1) and the special service for the disabled will be operated as normal.
