Elections 2023 – Mitsotakis for the “special purpose government”: Our opponents are completely confused

"There is a limit to slander" says the prime minister in an interview - "Stability or instability?" the stakes of the election

Newsroom May 17 02:25

“There is this new ‘idea’ for the sole purpose of investigating the case of wiretapping on a ‘special purpose government’ which forces us to re-raise the stakes of the elections: Stability or instability?”, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told Parapolitika.

Asked about his interview in relation to what Tsipras in the cross-channel with the “special purpose government”, and when asked if Tsipras and Androulakis want to send him to the special court, he said: “I am involved in politics, I have been watching elections for more than 40 years. It is the first time that 4 days before the elections there is only one alternative government proposal and then there is absolute chaos. We started with the government of the losers, we went to the government of tolerance, now we have this new spawn of a special purpose government, with the sole purpose of investigating the case of wiretapping. All this I think compels us to raise again the dilemma of the elections, not only in the logic of whether the country will go forward or backward, but whether we will have stability or a chaos on the other side”, said the prime minister.

He clarified that these “only refer to the absolute confusion of our opponents, because seeing that they are losing, they do everything in their power to hold on to their seats or claim in some way that is deeply extra-institutional their return to power . Honestly, I can’t understand this special purpose government as some imagine it, neither how it will be formed, nor how it will stand, nor exactly what it will do, from the moment that the wiretapping case is also in court”.

At the same time, he made it clear that “and at any time anyone who wants – after all, we have given this possibility – and in the next Parliament, a new investigation on the issue of wiretapping may very well be set up. What is the reason for the country to enter into an incredible adventure of instability just so that Mr. Tsipras and Mr. Androulakis can meet in public against me and New Democracy. Because nothing else unites them and keeps them so firmly on the same line, than their desire that I not be prime minister and that New Democracy not be in government. This does not constitute an alternative proposal of the government”.

“The Greek people will give a strong mandate to the ND on the evening of May 21”

To the question he received about whether Tsipras and Androulakis wish to send him to the Special Court for wiretapping, he answered: “I don’t know that. Mr. Androulakis was the one who told us that some people should go to jail. I want to remind both Mr. Androulakis and Mr. Tsipras that justice is delivered by justice itself and not by political opponents. Mr. Polakis was the one who, before the previous elections, said “we have to send some people to prison in order to win the elections”, so there is expertise from that side”.

He made clear that, “all this will be canceled in practice. With the strong message and the strong command that the Greek people will give on the evening of May 21. I would say to all our fellow citizens, who may be undecided or think that they may abstain from the elections to realize that this ‘ballot box’ is extremely critical, the issue is not only who will govern but whether we will have the next day a a stable government against a Turkey that we don’t know how it will move the next day, a government that will be able to deal effectively with the big problems”.

Regarding whether he will address Tsipras the day after the elections, he made it clear that he will respect and wait for the result of the Greek people: “I don’t have to tell you many things about what I will do at that moment, because I will respect and wait for result of the Greek people, but since you are asking me if I have anything to do with Mr. Tsipras, you obviously know the answer, but I will not go into more details. Let’s wait and see the result, we will respect the verdict of the Greek people”.

“You know, at the end of every pre-election period, there comes a point where we have given everything, we have traveled all over Greece. And at some point, somewhere on Friday night we will stop our activity, go eat with our family and then we will wait and respect the verdict of the Greek people. That’s the beauty of the democratic process, we’ll have time to talk about everything else on Monday morning.”

“I am determined to move forward in leaps over the next four years”

Regarding the president of PASOK, Nikos Androulakis: “I have a few things to say with Mr. Androulakis. He has waged a fierce anti-New Democratic struggle, he has actually aligned himself with Mr. Tsipras on many different levels. I am convinced that if the numbers come out they will try to make a minority government, tolerance, as one can imagine”.

“There is only one way to close every loophole for such political monstrosity. And this is none other than the ND being very strong on the night of the elections so that there is no doubt about who will govern the country for the next four years”.

On cooperation governments vs self-reliance, he made it clear that “I am determined to proceed with in leaps in the next four years, as the stronger the mandate I receive the easier this process will be”.

He made it clear that the ND’s governing proposal is the only convincing one, stating that it is the first electoral process in decades “where there is no alternative proposal and our opponents are falling back, without anyone making a convincing alternative proposal”.

Regarding the vote of Greeks abroad, he stated that: “The revision process will begin in 2025 for the vote of Greeks abroad, 2/3 of the Parliament is needed, and SYRIZA should also take a position on this issue”.
