Turkish media takes aim at the US for not helping Greece in the Evros fires

The media outlet says Greece hosts one of the most important military bases in Europe

Newsroom August 29 11:52

Under the headline: “In the crosshairs for the fires in Greece” the Turkish news network ensonhaber.com claims that there are reactions in Greece against the US for abstaining from providing assistance in fighting the fires in Evros, although Washington maintains a significant military presence in the region.

“For ten days now, forest fires have been burning in the Alexandroupolis and Evros region. At the heart of the reactions is the fact that the US, which has turned the region into a military base, is not providing any assistance to Greece,” the publication says, stressing: “As of August 19, the burned forest area has exceeded 720,000 acres. This fire is considered the largest recorded on European territory in recent years”.

The publication makes reference to the US military presence in Alexandroupoli, noting that the area is home to one of the most important US bases in Europe, of particular importance because of the war in Ukraine.

“Alexandroupoli became one of the most important bases of the US military in Europe, especially after the war in Ukraine. Most arms shipments to Europe are made through Alexandroupolis. Thousands of American tanks, helicopters, ammunition, and military personnel were shipped here and then to the mainland of SE. Europe,” ensonhaber.com writes, adding that “As part of the defense cooperation agreement signed in 2021, Athens made the barracks of the 156th Mechanized Artillery Battalion in the US available as a base.”
