Italy: Dozens of boats with illegal immigrants in Lampedusa – 7,000 arrived in 24 hours, Meloni asks for help (videos)

It resembles a true invasion - "We are at war" says Rome - Salvini: "If arrivals continue at this rate, my country will collapse"

Many dozens of boats filled with illegal immigrants from Tunisia flooded Lampedusa on Wednesday.

Almost 7,000 illegal immigrants arrived in a period of about 24 hours, which is indicative of the difficult situation in Italy.

This was the Italian island of Lampedusa yesterday.

By last night, 100 boats full of illegal immigrants had landed.

The Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni mentioned the issue of illegal immigration during an interview on public radio and television Rai.

“The issue of relocations is of secondary importance, in recent months they have been minimal. The problem is to stop the arrival of migrants in Italy, but I still don’t see concrete answers arriving”, Meloni stressed.

She confirmed that “some time ago Italy informed its partners that it cannot automatically take back those who sought asylum in other countries and had initially entered Europe from Italy. Our hotspots are full and Europe must help us protect our borders”, the head of the Italian government said.

Speaking to members of the Rome Foreign Correspondents Association, League Secretary and Italian Transport Minister Matteo Salvini said:

“The problem is the departures from Tunisia, the necessary control is not exercised. And I can say that this increase in arrivals to Lampedusa is not accidental. I think that someone wants to put in a difficult position, a government that is ‘not convenient’.

“Human trafficking is in the hands of organized crime, it is about profits of millions of euros and an ‘act of war’ against Italy. If the arrivals continue at this rate, my country will collapse”, said the Italian Minister of Transport and Deputy Prime Minister of the government.

According to Salvini “the death of the child of only five months, last night outside Lampedusa, symbolizes the social and political death of Europe” and “Italy has been left alone, with Germany and France which, in the last hours, they decided to close their doors”.

He also emphasized that “if Italy is forced to deal with immigration and refugees alone, no kind of intervention can be ruled out. The main issue is to protect the southern borders of Europe”, underlined Matteo Salvini.

In relation, finally, to the European elections next June, he stood “in favor of an alliance of all the forces that are considered alternatives to the left and the socialists, so that the ‘Ursula majority’ does not continue to rule the EU”.
