Lemnos: Issues arise due to severe weather – Power outages in several areas

The stormy south winds caused trees to fall on poles, resulting in many areas of the island not being electrified

Newsroom February 12 05:27

The violent storm combined with the gale-force southerly winds that have been blowing on Lemnos since yesterday, Sunday, caused problems on the northeastern Aegean island.

The biggest problems were mainly recorded in the electricity supply as the gusty south winds caused trees to fall on poles, resulting in many areas of the island not being electrified.

According to ERT, these are areas of Myrina, Atsiki, the area of the Airport, Kaspaka, Agios Dimitrios, Sardes, Kornos, Daphne and Katalakkos.

Two vehicles were crushed by a falling wall of the Atsiki stadium, problems and on the Ragava bridge in Kaspaka, resulting in traffic disruption.

Myrina High School was closed by order of the Mayor and students were evacuated from the school as water entered the classrooms and also due to the prefabricated classrooms which were deemed unsafe.

The Mayor of Lemnos, speaking to ERT Aegean, stressed that “since 6 am when the severe weather started, the amount of rain reached 150 tons per acre.

The crews are on the road early, the phenomena are extreme and citizens are advised not to drive around unnecessarily.” The Prefect of Lemnos Apostolos Koutsogiannis was also in the affected areas early this morning.

In a statement, the Municipality of Lemnos calls on citizens to be extremely careful in their movements, to limit them to the absolutely necessary and to be particularly careful for any tree falls, as well as for the presence of debris on the roadway.

“We are particularly drawing attention with regard to the Ragava Bridge, which is closed to traffic and we appeal to no one to approach this point.

Also, drivers are advised not to drive in areas with torrents and Irish bridges.

Theofanellis and after contacting the North Aegean Region, the Myrina High School will be closed today, Monday 12 February “stressed in the announcement.
