Modernisation and reform of the Disciplinary Law of police personnel – The three axes

Nearly after 16 years comes the first implementation of disciplinary regulation

Newsroom May 9 05:32

The Ministry of Citizen Protection and the Hellenic Police Headquarters are advancing towards the modernisation and reform of the disciplinary law of the uniformed personnel of the Greek Police, nearly after sixteen years comes the first implementation of disciplinary regulation in an effort for the Hellenic Police to enter a new era of restructuring and reorganisation.

The proposed amendments move along three axes:

– Removing from active service those uniformed personnel who have committed serious criminal and disciplinary offenses, while ensuring a more effective handling of corruption cases within the Hellenic Police Force,
– Reducing bureaucratic procedures
– Expediting the administration of disciplinary justice

The proposed changes aim to reform and update Presidential Decree 120/2008 and to address bureaucratic hurdles caused by unnecessary administrative investigations while also aligning with decisions taken by the European Court of Human Rights. Key updates include adding offenses as disciplinary misdemeanors according to the new Criminal Code, mandatorily placing police officers under investigation for serious crimes, and immediate dismissal for those  who have convicted felonies or serious violations. Additionally, administrative investigations for minor issues will be reduced, and time limits for repeating disciplinary proceedings extended. The new decree will undergo a legality review by the Council of State.
