Newsroom May 29 12:52

Compensation of 200,000 euros has been awarded by a court to the children of a 65-year-old man who died after a dog attack in March 2020 in the area of Elairema in Pylaia, Thessaloniki.

The money is to be paid by the municipality of Pylaia-Hortiatis, in the administrative boundaries of which the attack took place with the family’s lawyer speaking of “moral vindication” and adding that the court decision “opens the way for the claim for compensation from the municipalities, as it delineates the responsibilities of local government for the management of stray dogs.”

According to information from Eleftheros Typos, the municipality of Pylaia – Hortiatis is waiting to receive the decision of the Administrative Court of First Instance of Thessaloniki in writing and will then decide whether to appeal or pay the amount of compensation.

The attack

The deadly attack against the 65-year-old had occurred at dawn on Friday 6 March 2020 when the unfortunate man had gone out for a walk in the area of Eliorema and was suddenly attacked by a pack of stray dogs, which threw him to the ground biting him on the head and all over his body.

Then the 65-year-old was found by policemen of the DIA team patrolling the area and was immediately transferred to the Hippocratic Hospital, where he was immediately admitted to the ICU.

Despite the doctors’ efforts to keep him alive, he did not succeed and he died three weeks later. It should be noted that a short time after the attack on the 65-year-old man, the same pack also bit an 82-year-old man, who was also taken to the Hippocrateon hospital with more minor injuries.

After the attacks, an employee of the Municipality of Pylaia-Hortiatis removed and transported six dogs of the pack to a then cooperating private animal shelter, with him also being attacked by members of an animal welfare association who opposed the transport.
