California legislature considers Bill banning schools from notifying parents of gender changes

Legal battles ensued when the state's policy was challenged by the district and blocked by U.S. Judge Roger Benitez

Newsroom May 29 02:26

The California state legislature is considering AB 1955, a bill that aims to prevent schools from informing parents about their children’s decisions to change genders.

Supported by State Superintendent Tony Thurmond, the bill counters a Chino Valley school board’s policy requiring parental notification for gender changes, which clashed with Governor Newsom’s statewide approach.

Legal battles ensued when the state’s policy was challenged by the district and blocked by U.S. Judge Roger Benitez.

California Democrats now seek to enshrine Newsom’s policy into law.

Thurmond praised the bill, emphasizing the importance of preserving students’ privacy and autonomy in coming out as transgender.

He argued against schools forcing such disclosures, stressing that it should be a personal conversation between students and parents.

Newsom defended the school’s policy as a measure to protect transgender students from potential bullying if their gender identity became public knowledge.

Despite criticism and questions about parental notification, Newsom has remained firm in supporting the policy, aligning with broader clashes over education and gender policy within the state.

However, asked last year by Breitbart News to defend his policy, Newsom could not explain why parents should not be notified:
