Newsroom June 11 09:24

In Psathi village, three houses have been consumed by flames, with around 10 others sustaining serious damage. Authorities confirm no immediate threat to human life, but the battle against the fire must persist to bring the situation under control before nightfall.

Cyprus Fire Service spokesperson, Andreas Kettis, reported that the uncontained fire is spreading eastwards, posing a threat to the evacuated village of Houlou. Kettis highlighted the challenging and inaccessible terrain, stating, “Efforts are underway to deploy the two aerial vehicles that recently arrived in Cyprus from Australia.”

In Psathi, Houlou, and Polemi, the power supply has been halted for safety reasons and will remain disconnected until it is safe to restore. Paphos Prefect, Giorgos Chrysafinis, assured that the immediate danger to lives has been averted. However, the fire has swept through Psathi and is advancing towards Lemona, leaving a trail of destruction that will be assessed by District Authorities at the earliest opportunity.

Chrysafinis mentioned ongoing coordination with firefighting services and tanker vehicles, expressing readiness to provide accommodation support in hotels for villagers if needed. Aerial and ground firefighting teams, bolstered by five aircraft, are tirelessly battling the flames. The majority of the village has been evacuated, with the remaining residents assisting in firefighting operations. Ambulances have been dispatched due to reports of respiratory issues among some residents. Poeple have rescued injured animals from the fire for treatment at veterinary facilities.
