Italian ship is laying fibre optic cables … with the presence of the Greek and Turkish navy

The Teliri ship is expected in the next 24 hours to sail towards the area demarcated between Greece and Egypt, namely south of Rhodes and further west

Newsroom July 3 02:34

Under the surveillance of units from both the Greek and Turkish Navies, the Italian ship “Teliri” is laying fiber optic cables within the potential Greek Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and continental shelf.

As reported by Kathimerini on Tuesday, the “Teliri” was positioned several tens of miles southwest of Kastellorizo and is expected to move towards the area demarcated between Greece and Egypt, specifically south of Rhodes and further west, within the next 24 hours.

Initially, the Italian ship was monitored by corvettes from the Turkish Navy. Upon entering the area of the potential Greek EEZ, it came under the watch of the Greek Navy missile ship “Grigoropoulos.”

A key concern is whether the Turkish corvette will withdraw as the “Teliri” continues its activities further west into the demarcated area between Greece and Egypt. This area is governed by an agreement that has effectively nullified the Turkish-Libyan memorandum.

According to sources, the Italian government had properly informed both Athens and Ankara of the “Teliri’s” planned operations on behalf of Elettra Tlc SpA.

It should be noted that the Heraklion Station of the Naval Hydrographic Service issued a NAVTEX a few days ago, detailing the schedule for the “Teliri” to lay submarine fiber optic cables between June 29 and July 18, when the relevant activities in Greek waters are expected to be completed.
