Crete: 5.3 magnitude earthquake south of Chania – It’s important that it occurred in a marine area, says Chouliaras

A new earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale occurred one minute after 7 a.m. this morning southwest of Crete.

Specifically, and according to the assessment of the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, the tremor was recorded in the sea area 59 km southwest of Paleochora Chania with the focal depth located at 17.2 km.

According to the fire service although the vibration was particularly felt in the prefecture of Chania no damage has been recorded so far.

Recalled that an earthquake tremor occurred on Saturday afternoon in the same area of 4.2 degrees on the Richter scale.

According to seismologist and research director of the Geodynamic Institute of the Athens Observatory Gerasimos Houliaras, who spoke to SKY radio, they are monitoring the seismic activity to see if it is the main earthquake.

He said the earthquake was characterized as relatively shallow but its focal depth and the fact that it occurred in a submarine area was important, he said, otherwise it would have been felt more.
