John Lennon: music legend’s glasses auctioned for £3,000

They were snatched by a fan from Abbey Road Studios in 1968

Newsroom July 22 12:24

A pair of John Lennon’s round sunglasses are expected to sell for £3,000 at auction.

They are the trademark-shaped glasses chosen by the legend of the world music scene, which were snatched from the top of a piano at Abbey Road Studios in London by a fan named Michael in 1968 during a visit by Lennon there.

A collection of photographs taken at the famous recording studios, including some captured on the day of the Beatles’ album cover shoot, in which members of the band walk across a pedestrian crossing, is also for sale.

The items will be auctioned on July 31 at Farleigh Golf Club in Surrey. A spokeswoman for auction house Catherine Southon Auctioneers & Valuers said the glasses were delivered to a man by Lennon himself, according to the BBC.

“The young man saw the glasses placed on the piano and went to pick them up, but his then-girlfriend who was accompanying him told him to leave them. John Lennon then replied “ok, he can have them” according to the auction house.

The collection of 33 black and white Abbey Road photographs will be sold with copyright at a price of 200-300 English pounds.

It includes images of Beatles members Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr and George Martin, music producer, arranger and composer.
