Olympic Games: Montenegro’s Kovinic First Opponent for Sakkari

Maria Sakkari will begin her women's singles tennis matches against the flag bearer of the Montenegrin Olympic team

Newsroom July 25 08:34

In the first round of the Olympic Games, the Greek tennis player was drawn to play against Danka Kovinic, who is ranked No. 668 in the world. Kovinic has defeated Sakkari twice, in 2017 and 2018, but the Greek player had no trouble winning against her in 2022 on a clay surface.

If Sakkari advances, she will face either Ekaterina Alexandrova or Yuan Yu in the second round. In the third round, her potential opponents include Katerina Siniakova, Yulia Putintseva, and Marta Kostyuk.

Should Sakkari reach the quarterfinals, she may encounter another flag bearer, this time from the USA. Coco Gauff is the favorite to meet Sakkari at this stage, with Jasmine Paolini, Barbora Krejcikova, and Jessica Pegula also being possible opponents.

In women’s doubles, Maria Sakkari and Despina Papamichael will face the American duo Danielle Collins and Desirae Krawczyk in the first round.
