Bangladesh: Prime Minister Resigns, Flees to India via Military Helicopter

The resignation of Bangladesh's Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been confirmed by the country's military, according to CNN and Prothom Alo Daily. Sheikh Hasina was reportedly flown to India in a military helicopter

Newsroom August 5 02:54

Prothom Alo Daily reported that Sheikh Hasina boarded the helicopter at the Bangladesh Air Force base in Kurmitola at 14:25 local time. It is speculated that she may travel to a third country from there, potentially marking the end of her long tenure.

As the resignation unfolded, thousands of protesters stormed the Prime Minister’s residence in Dhaka, as reported by local television.

In response to the turmoil in Bangladesh, India has declared a state of high alert along its border with Bangladesh.

Previously, an adviser to the Bangladeshi Prime Minister had indicated to AFP that resignation was a possibility, following a month of anti-government protests that have resulted in at least 300 deaths. The adviser noted, “The situation makes resignation a possibility, but I am unsure if it will happen.”

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s army chief, who is expected to make a public statement, is in discussions with non-military figures about the country’s situation.

The Prime Minister’s son has urged Bangladeshi security forces to prevent any unauthorized takeover of power. In a Facebook post, he emphasized, “Your duty is to ensure the security of our people and our country, as well as to uphold the Constitution. You must not allow any unelected government to assume power, even temporarily.”
