Areti Aravela Spyridou finished 10th in the 100m Backstroke S2 and will return to the pool on Saturday

Newsroom August 29 07:00

Grigoris Polychronidis made a strong start in the BC3 boccia category at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. The “gold” Paralympian from London, with ramp operator Katerina Patroni, won 5-2 against French competitor Gilles Menard (with ramp operator Christophe Menard) in his first match of the 4th qualifying group.

The 43-year-old athlete has taken the first step toward securing one of the top two spots in the group standings, which will earn him a place in the quarterfinals.

Winning Start for Morphie Metzou in BC4 Boccia

Morphie Metzou also had a successful start in the BC4 boccia category’s first qualifying group. The Greek athlete defeated Ana Maria Arabasich from Croatia 5-4 in her opening match of the top event, taking the first step toward securing one of the top two spots in the group standings for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals.

Metzou will compete again today, facing Spanish player Sara Aguero Mayo in the evening (August 29, 20:20).

Spyridou and Tziveleki’s Results

In contrast, Maria Fanouriou Tziveleki was eliminated from the final of the 200m Freestyle S5. The Greek swimmer covered the distance in three minutes, 28 seconds, and 19 hundredths of a second, finishing 5th in the 2nd qualifying heat, which led to her elimination from further competition.

12-year-old Areti Aravela Spyridou experienced one of the most significant moments of her life as she competed in the Paralympics at such a young age. The teenage Greek swimmer participated in the second qualifying heat of the 100m Backstroke S2, finishing in 6th place with a time of three minutes, 45 seconds, and 65 hundredths of a second. Unfortunately, she did not advance to the final.
