PASOK elections: The debate of the six presidential candidates (Update)

Tense moments between the six PASOK presidential contenders

Newsroom September 24 07:43

Preparations at ERT were intense for the debate of candidates running for the presidency of PASOK. Spaces designated for the candidates were arranged, and flower arrangements—offered as a gift from ERT to the six candidates—were placed in the venue.

The terms for conducting the debate were as follows:

Nikos Androulakis, Pavlos Geroulanos, Nadia Giannakopoulou, Anna Diamantopoulou, Haris Doukas, and Michalis Katrinis agreed to present their positions across six thematic areas:

  1. 1. Economy and Development
  2. 2. Social Welfare, New Generation, Demographics
  3. 3. Foreign Policy, Defense, European Union
  4. 4. State, Institutions, Local Government
  5. 5. Climate Crisis, Civil Protection, Energy Transition
  6. 6. PASOK: The Next Day

Each journalist’s question within these six areas should not exceed 30 seconds, and each response was limited to 90 seconds.

Apostolos Mangiariadis and Giorgos Kouvaras was allowed to ask a total of six follow-up questions. Each follow-up question should not exceed 15 seconds, and the corresponding response should be no longer than 30 seconds.

Each candidate had the opportunity to ask five questions, make comments, or respond to a different candidate, each time focusing on a different thematic area. Both the question and the answer should not exceed 30 seconds, and the same time limits apply for follow-up remarks and rebuttals.

The debate was concluded with a final statement from each candidate, with a time limit of up to 90 seconds.

Androulakis: Our program is our flagship – As we follow the developments, the “special relationship” with Turkey will end up being a noose around our necks -We will take the initiative to change the method of selecting the leadership of the judiciary.

Geroulanos: The tax system in Greece is extremely unfair because we essentially tax the profession, not the income – Social security, demographics, and non-performing loans are three ticking time bombs – We stand by international law.

Diamantopoulou: A reform in the taxation of freelancers is necessary – I am standing alone in defense of the education law.

Doukas: Terms and rules should be established for private universities – The benefits of the Mitsotakis government are going in the wrong direction – We need to have clear lines regarding national issues – We should have voted in favor of the bill for postal voting.

Katrinis: There are two faces of Greece – Yes, we must use the veto against a real threat, which is Turkey.

Giannakopoulou: We have not discussed either immigration or other major issues in PASOK – Androulakis, you are not the only defender of PASOK.
