Big Bang Theory: A spin-off is coming and fans are reacting

The universe of the hit comedy series Big Bang Theory is expanding with a new spin-off, and fans are sharing their opinions about this latest development

Newsroom October 14 10:30

On Thursday (October 10), it was reported that the project, originally announced in 2023, will focus on three characters from the original series: comic book store owner Stuart Bloom, his girlfriend Denise, and recurring character Bert Kibbler.

Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, and Brian Posehn are set to reprise their roles in the series, which is currently being written and awaiting the green light from Max.

Chuck Lorre, the original co-creator of Big Bang Theory, who was also the executive producer of the spin-off Young Sheldon, which ended earlier this year, is returning for the new series.

Following the announcement, many fans questioned the need for yet another series based on the successful comedy, which ran for 12 seasons from 2007 to 2020.

The original show became a massive hit for CBS, making its stars, including Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco, and Johnny Galecki, some of the highest-paid actors on television.

Young Sheldon also had a successful run on CBS, lasting seven seasons from 2017 to 2024. After the show ended, executive producer Steve Holland said, “It’s the right time to finish this story.”

However, it seems that people aren’t fully on board with returning to this world. In response to the spin-off news, X/Twitter has been filled with posts urging producers to move on from the idea and create something original instead.

“This will be a pass from me,” one person wrote, while another added, “Or… hear me out… let’s greenlight or revive more original sitcoms with original characters and original plots that haven’t seen the light of day, instead of doing endless revivals, reboots, and spinoffs.”

Someone else pleaded, “Cancel it, I beg you,” while another questioned, “Why? Literally why?”

Currently, multiple spin-offs are planned across streaming platforms, with new series based on Game of Thrones, Lord of the Rings, The Walking Dead, and The Boys either in progress or in the pipeline.
