Mimis Plessas: A ten-day tribute to the music legend at the Pallas Theatre

An unforgettable ten-day celebration dedicated to Mimis Plessas culminated in a successful musical-theatrical show featuring numerous artists, organized by renowned creator Giorgos Valaris

Newsroom October 22 10:30

The tribute to the late composer Mimis Plessas, who passed away just shy of his 100th birthday, filled the Pallas Theatre with heartfelt performances and nostalgic melodies. The shows, aptly titled “A Unique Farewell,” celebrated the timeless songs of this iconic composer, whose music has been immortalized by great artists such as Nana Mouskouri, Jenny Vanou, Giannis Poulopoulos, Stratos Dionysiou, and Rena Kumioti.

Among the highlights, Plessas set records with the most commercially successful Greek album ever released, “To Dromo,” featuring lyrics by Lefteris Papadopoulos and selling 4 million copies since its release in 1969. His songs for cinema—such as “To Feggari Pano The Mou,” “Glyka Pounouse to Machairi,” “Thalassies Chantries,” “Tosa Kalokairia,” “Tha Pio Apopse to Feggari,” and “Anoixe Petra”—are linked to unforgettable moments that have left a lasting impact.

The stage of Pallas hosted numerous artists—actors and singers alike—who presented a highly original performance under the creative direction of George Valaris, accompanied by a large orchestra conducted by Antonis Gounaris, transporting the audience to cherished, nostalgic times.

A particularly touching moment was the appearance of Glykeria, a beloved figure in Greek music, who performed during the first two days of the tribute on October 11 and 12. Those fortunate enough to attend witnessed scenes from beloved films brought to life by Nina Lotsari, Bessy Malfa, and Alexandros Bourdoumis, who provided a vivid representation of Plessas’s songs, while Giannis Zouganelis added the necessary comedic touch.

Another moving highlight was the presence of the composer’s nephew, Stefanos Korkolis, on piano, accompanying the beautiful rendition by Sophia Manousaki. Evangelia Moumouris showcased her versatility across different genres, further enriching the performances.

One of the night’s unforgettable moments came when the incredible voice of Olga Venetis delivered a stunning interpretation of “An Ine Agapi Amartia,” evoking memories of the beloved song “Agapi Mas.” The audience particularly enjoyed “Athanato Nero,” one of Plessas’s most beautiful yet less popular hits. However, the loudest applause erupted when Venetis’s diamond voice sang “Eklapsa Xtes,” one of the composer’s most cherished songs, originally popularized by Giannis Poulopoulos.

Another delightful surprise was the appearance of Kostas Makridis, who reminded everyone of Plessas’s folk influences, energizing the Pallas audience with his distinct style.

Joining the evening’s performances were Zozó Sapoutzaki and the ensemble of Bessy Malfa, Eleni Karakasi, Sophia Manousaki, Olga Venetis, Evangelia Moumouris, Alexandros Bourdoumis, Giannis Zouganelis, who together delivered a memorable rendition of “Thalassies Chantries,” closing the night on a high note.
