Sophie Turner: She reveals the reason she left the U.S. amid divorce from Joe Jonas

"My life was on hold," said the 28-year-old actress, reflecting on her time away from England

Sophie Turner has revealed the real reason she left the U.S. amid her divorce from former husband Joe Jonas in a new, revealing interview.

The 28-year-old Game of Thrones star spoke candidly about the past year, touching on themes of nostalgia and motherhood, as she graces the cover of Harper’s Bazaar‘s December-January issue.

Turner, who is set to receive the Acting Award at the Harper’s Bazaar Women of the Year Awards 2024, finalized her divorce from the 35-year-old singer in September, a little over a year after he filed for separation.

The two had married in 2019. The divorce process was delayed by a heated custody dispute over their two daughters, four-year-old Willa and two-year-old Delphine.

Before their marriage ended, Turner, originally from Northampton, and Jonas had been living in America with their two daughters, though Turner had long wanted to return to the United Kingdom.

Speaking about the nostalgia she felt, Turner recalled, “In every city we’d end up in, the first thing I’d do was find a British shop and stock up on chocolate for a month…”

The actress revealed that concerns over gun violence and recent legal changes in the U.S. were key motivators for her desire to return home.

“Gun violence, the overturning of Roe v. Wade… It all just kept piling up,” she noted.

In June 2022, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which had guaranteed women the right to abortion up to the point of fetal viability, roughly until the 24th week.

Since returning to the U.K., Turner has found success not only in her career, with her new dramatic miniseries Joan, but also in her personal life, moving forward with British aristocrat Peregrine Pearson. Just days ago, she took to Instagram to wish Pearson a happy 30th birthday and shared some of their photos together.

Reflecting on her return to her homeland, the actress shared: “I’m so happy to be back. I felt like my life was on hold until I got back to England. I never really feel like myself when I’m not in London, with my friends and family. I was away for so long—six years—during a time when my friends were getting engaged and I was pregnant.”

“I went to dinner with a friend recently, and she told me, ‘I never got to touch your belly.’ We missed out on those simple, important experiences together,” Turner confided.
