Ampelokipoi: Anti-Terrorism unit sees apartment as possible safe house – Victim’s identity key to case

The young woman who has been seriously injured is 'known' to State Security. The deceased has not yet been identified, and the woman is unable to speak - A 'mishandling' of an explosive device is the scenario considered most likely for the explosion

Newsroom October 31 07:42

Authorities currently believe that the explosion in the Ampelokipoi apartment might have been caused by mishandling an explosive device or accidentally triggering explosives. A 9mm pistol was found in the apartment, and the seriously injured young woman is reportedly known to the State Security Services.

The Anti-Terrorism Unit is on high alert following the explosion that left one man dead and a woman seriously injured in an apartment on Arkadias Street, Ampelokipoi. Initial speculation about a gas leak was quickly ruled out due to a lack of evidence.

The identity of the young woman, whose severe injuries have precluded her from communicating, prompted further investigation once it was found that she was known to the State Security Services. The explosion occurred in the apartment’s living room, instantly killing the man, who remains unidentified, and injuring the woman, who was nearby.

The apartment had been provided to the couple by its owner, who currently resides in the Netherlands. During the Anti-Terrorism Unit’s investigation, a 9mm pistol was located and has been sent to forensic labs to check if it has been previously linked to any criminal activity.

Preliminary assessments suggest that an explosive device under construction may have detonated in the man’s hands. The man’s identification is considered crucial to the case’s progress, as his background may help clarify potential motives or connections.

The explosion occurred in a third-floor apartment on Arkadias Street around midday, leveling part of the apartment’s rear and causing serious damage to neighboring properties. Firefighters and police responded immediately, deploying 23 firefighters with six vehicles, a specialized ladder truck, and a rescue dog team from the Hellenic Fire Corps’ Special Units Disaster Response Division (EMAK).

Eyewitnesses in the area reported hearing a loud bang and saw two women injured at the scene.
