Giannis Antetokounmpo on Trump’s racist comment: I keep my opinions to myself, I’m here to play basketball

NBA star addresses political controversy, emphasizes focus on basketball

Newsroom November 3 10:53

The response from the Greek NBA star regarding comments made by the presidential candidate during a speech at the Milwaukee Bucks arena.

Recently, Donald Trump included Giannis Antetokounmpo in a political speech, prompting the Greek forward to give his answer.

Yesterday, at a campaign rally at the Fiserv Forum, home of the Bucks, Donald Trump went on a racist tirade regarding Giannis Antetokounmpo, to which the Bucks leader responded.

“I haven’t heard his statements. I don’t follow politics that much, and from the little I see, I try to keep my opinions to myself and my family. I’m here to play basketball and answer basketball questions. I wish both candidates good luck.”

Trump’s racist comment about Antetokounmpo: “Who is more Greek? Him or me?”

Donald Trump spoke at the Milwaukee Bucks arena, the Fiserv Forum, where last year the Republican National Convention took place. Initially, the Republican candidate appeared excited about his rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City, where several speakers made racist comments, including comedian Tony Hinchcliffe, who referred to Puerto Rico as a “garbage island.”

However, he claimed that a similar rally was occurring at his NBA team’s arena, making comments about Giannis Antetokounmpo while disregarding the player’s entire background.

“Your team is very good. I would say the Greek is a good player. Don’t you agree? And tell me. Who is more Greek? The Greek or me? I would say we are the same, right?” said Donald Trump, consciously or unconsciously ignoring the fact that Antetokounmpo was born in Greece to Nigerian parents, is a Greek citizen, speaks Greek, and plays for the Greek National Team. Nonetheless, he made good comments about his performance. “He’s a very good player, perhaps the best in the NBA. They say he’s a very nice guy too. But with your help, we will defeat Kamala Harris and make America great again,” he said.

Trump thanks Brett Favre for support, and says he’s got as much Greek in him as Giannis Antetokounmpo.
