Explosion in Ampelokipi: ELAS spokeswoman speaks of a new generation of terrorists with a common element of the counter-authoritarian movement

The ELAS spokeswoman said that "we cannot rule out communication with senior people who are guiding them on the materials and methodology for the mechanisms."

Newsroom November 4 09:30

“The Anti-terrorism officials believe this is a new generation terrorist with a common element that they come from the anti-authoritarian area,” said on Monday morning the spokeswoman of the National Police, Constantia Demoglidou, on the assessments regarding the persons involved in the case of the explosion in the apartment in Abelokipoi.

However, he added that “we cannot rule out communication with older people who are guiding them on the materials and methodology for the devices.”

“These people do not want to spend too much time with the mechanism in their hands to avoid being caught and to avoid an accident.”

As for the potential target, Demoglidou after noting that the apartment in Ambelokipi is in a “hub near ministries, embassies, police stations” then added that “notes and blueprints have not given enough information but the exploration of the mobiles will show where they would put the device.”

Reiterating the assessment that the device that exploded in the 36-year-old’s hands was being prepared for activation in the next 24 hours after the explosion, Demoglidou said “We cannot rule out it being linked to earlier attacks. We had a failed one at MAT headquarters and a successful one at the Ministry of Labour. There were findings then but no results to identify the perpetrators.”

The explosion in the apartment killed a man, who was identified Saturday, and seriously injured a woman who is hospitalized and has been arrested.

According to reports, conversations are indicating that they were going to plant the bomb on Thursday night while the 31-year-old, who was arrested on Saturday, was going to St. Paraskevi on Thursday night to leave the keys with the child’s mother, who is in the Netherlands. That means they would have left the apartment with the bomb and left the house. They had been in the apartment 10 days ago.

As for the network of the group, initial estimates suggest that it cannot have only four people, namely the victim, the injured woman, the 31-year-old man, and another woman who has been charged but is outside Greece. It is considered certain that there is a guide as well as other people, at least three.

Under the microscope for authorities is a detail of the claim of responsibility for the (failed) attack on the MAT. There the terrorists wrote that “we may have failed now but they won’t always be lucky”. That means they may have been bombing the MAT again.
