Pierakakis: Around 300,000 ‘eternal students’ to be expelled

He noted upcoming reforms, including adjustments to school excursions and reported incidents of in-school violence on the “stop-bullying” platform

Newsroom November 4 01:10

Minister of Education, Religion, and Sports Kyriakos Pierakakis discussed a range of pressing issues on Greek television network ANT1

Pierakakis also announced the anticipated expulsion of about 300,000 long-term students, approximately half the total student population, explaining that the high number of inactive students impacts university rankings and academic standing internationally.

“The initial projection is around 300,000 student removals. We will confirm the number by the end of the academic year,” he said. Regarding student transfers, he added, “Transfers will proceed within days.”

Regarding university dormitories, the Minister explained that plans are underway to double dormitory bed capacity. He emphasized the need for school building upgrades, which, although typically a municipal responsibility, are supported by the state through the “Marietta Giannakou” program.

Referring to a recent incident in Vouliagmeni where students consumed adulterated alcohol, Pierakakis encouraged parents to report such cases to the authorities. He clarified, “Schools manage in-school issues, but collaboration is needed to address broader concerns, including violence.”

Reforms in School Excursions and Anti-Bullying Initiatives

The Minister announced a new framework for school excursions, with tools to be provided to educators. He emphasized ongoing discussions with educational unions to create a framework that empowers teachers in their roles.

Addressing bullying, Pierakakis reported that 624 incidents, mostly from parents, have been submitted on the newly established ministry platform. Some cases are handled within the school, while more severe cases are escalated to regional authorities.

School Infrastructure Challenges

He acknowledged widespread issues with school facilities, explaining that while municipalities are officially responsible, the state is committed to supporting upgrades. The “Marietta Giannakou” renovation program, with a budget of €250 million, will help refurbish school units, with private donors contributing as well.

University Dormitories Expansion

Pierakakis emphasized that university dormitory capacity, around 9,000 beds in 2019, is set to double through ongoing investments. The Ministry aims to increase the number of available beds to 20,000 by 2027-2028.

Expulsion of Long-Term Students

On the issue of long-term students, the Minister explained that extensions are allowed under specific conditions, such as medical, professional, and athletic reasons. He highlighted that unlike Greek institutions, international universities often require students to re-enroll and pause studies, affecting rankings and projecting a less rigorous image for Greek institutions.

In conclusion, Pierakakis reaffirmed the government’s commitment to addressing the ‘eternal student’ issue, stressing that existing legislation will be enforced to bring resolution.

Additional School Activities

Lastly, he discussed extra school activities like reforestation and blood donations, explaining that students will receive certificates reflecting their contributions and skills.
