At the Laskaridis Foundation, the exhibition “The Antikythera shipwreck: 124 years of underwater archaeological research”

The Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, the main sponsor of the research program "Return to Antikythera 2012-2025," is organizing the most comprehensive periodic exhibition to date, showcasing the results of modern research

Newsroom November 15 02:04

The exhibition “The Antikythera Shipwreck: 124 Years of Underwater Archaeological Research” is returning after six years to the Historic Library of the Foundation, giving the public another opportunity to explore and learn about the significant findings of the fascinating Antikythera shipwreck, including the famous Antikythera Mechanism.

The Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation, the principal sponsor of the “Return to Antikythera 2012-2025” research program, is hosting the most thorough exhibition yet. It features findings from research conducted since 2012, offering new insights into the ship, its equipment, cargo, and passengers.

Among the exhibits, there are bronze statue spears, a crowning table from the ship, and lead elements from the vessel’s five wooden anchors. A highlight is the head of a Hercules statue adorned with a vine wreath, which seems to match the marble headless Hercules statue of the Farnese type, found at the National Archaeological Museum and recovered by Symian sponge divers in 1901.

The exhibition is organized with the support of the Ministry of Culture and the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities.

Upcoming Press Conference

A press conference will be held on November 21 as part of the event.
