New York Times: Biden gave the green light to the Ukrainians to strike Russia with long-range missiles

First strikes in the coming days - Missiles likely to be used initially against Russian & North Korean troops, US officials say

Newsroom November 17 09:53

The U.S. has granted Ukraine permission to use long-range American missiles, known as Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), according to the New York Times. This move marks a significant shift in U.S. policy, with the weapons potentially being used against Russian and North Korean troops defending Ukraine’s position near Kursk in western Russia.

The decision came in response to Russia’s deployment of North Korean forces, a move that has heightened tensions on the battlefield. President Joe Biden’s approval represents a departure from earlier restrictions on advanced weaponry for Ukraine. Previously, the U.S. limited Ukraine to shorter-range systems, with a range of about 50 miles, to avoid escalating the conflict.

A Strategic Shift

Biden’s decision underscores a change in approach amidst increasing Russian advances and aims to place Ukraine in a stronger position for potential ceasefire negotiations. Ukrainian forces are expected to launch their first long-range strikes in the coming days, utilizing ATACMS missiles with a range of up to 306 kilometers.

Divided Opinions in Washington

This policy change has sparked internal debates among U.S. officials, particularly with the impending inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump in two months. Trump has voiced skepticism about U.S. support for Ukraine, pledging to end the war quickly but offering few specifics.

While some Congressional Republicans support Biden’s decision, others, along with Trump, have criticized the extensive aid provided to Kyiv. Russia has warned that relaxing restrictions on U.S. weapons’ use by Ukraine would be considered a significant escalation.

Uncertain Future

It remains unclear if Trump will reverse Biden’s decision upon assuming office. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s deployment of long-range missiles could alter the dynamics of the conflict, strengthening its negotiating position while raising concerns about further intensification of hostilities.

The White House declined to comment on the matter, citing operational security and the sensitivity of ongoing military developments.
