UN: Theodoros Roussopoulos visits New York – Discussion on the dangers of artificial intelligence

"With the UN, we are seeking solutions to a broad agenda of issues such as inequalities, increasing violence, the deadlocks caused by war conflicts and the need for environmental action," Mr Roussopoulos said

Newsroom November 21 03:47

The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Theodoros Roussopoulos, is visiting New York, the headquarters of the United Nations, to strengthen cooperation between the organizations.

On the occasion of his visit, Mr. Roussopoulos announced the planning of the first international meeting in Strasbourg, which will focus on artificial intelligence and the dangers it poses to democracy, such as misinformation and populism.

“Following a recent meeting with UN Secretary-General Anthony Guterres, I am again at the UN headquarters in New York strengthening cooperation with the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe of which I am President. We are planning the first international meeting in Strasbourg on issues of artificial intelligence and risks to democracy, such as misinformation and populism.”

“With the UN, we are seeking solutions to a broad agenda of issues such as inequalities, growing violence, the deadlock from war conflicts, and the need for environmental action before we let our common home become a hostile planet,” Roussopoulos said.

Mr Roussopoulos’ presence in New York marks a practical commitment to international cooperation and coordination on critical issues that require global responses.

The President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, during his visit to the United Nations headquarters, met – among others – with the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Amina Al Mohammed, Under Secretary General for Policy Guy Ryder, Under Secretary General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo, President of the United Nations General Assembly Philémon Yang, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Administrator Achim Steiner, UN Women Deputy Executive Director for Resource Management, Sustainability and Partnerships Kirsi Madi, and the Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) Navid Hanif.

Finally, Mr. Roussopoulos was received at the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America by Archbishop Elpidophoros of America, with whom they discussed issues related to the promotion of human rights, religious freedom, and the strengthening of ties between Europe and the Diaspora. Emphasis was placed on the role of the Church in social cohesion, and support for vulnerable groups and the Diaspora.
