Larissa: Farmers held a rally with tractors in the Municipality of Agia

They are protesting, accusing the government of delaying the announcement of a specific timeline and compensation amounts for the damage their crops have suffered

Newsroom December 4 01:38

Farmers in the Agia Municipality staged a rally today, using tractors and other agricultural vehicles, in the town’s central square. The protest was organized by the Unified Federation of Agricultural Associations of Larissa, in collaboration with local Agricultural Associations and Cooperatives in Agia.

The farmers are protesting, accusing the government of delaying the announcement of a specific timeline and compensation amounts for the damage their crops suffered during last autumn’s floods.

In a statement, the Federation noted:
*“The farmers of Agia, whose production was destroyed and income significantly reduced, have no other sources of revenue apart from the compensations that have been provided to all affected farmers in Thessaly—except for Agia. As a gesture of goodwill, we gave the Ministry of Rural Development a deadline until the end of November to announce the payment schedule and compensation amounts. So far, we have received no response.

Through our own investigations, we have determined the number of productive acres that need compensation. For apples, the amount is €380 per acre, while for chestnuts, the announced amount is €200 per acre. We demand that the ministry respond with a payment schedule and immediately compensate eligible apple and chestnut producers with the appropriate amounts.”*
