France: ‘I came, I saw, I was fired’ – How the newspapers comment on the fall of the Barnier government

Apart from Michel Barnier, the French newspapers also put Emmanuel Macron in the frame

Newsroom December 5 09:54

First on the agenda, as expected, is today in all French newspapers the fall of the Barnier government after the proposal for impeachment by Melanson’s Popular Front and Le Pen’s Front National, with the Economist leading the charge.

“I came, I saw, I was fired,” says Liberation with a photo of Barnier, while Le Figaro points out the historic nature of the result of yesterday’s vote in the French National Assembly.

For its part, Les Echos points to “the alliance of extremes” that led to the fall of the Barnier government by the votes of the left-wing and far-right parties in the French National Assembly.

L’Humanité chooses to frame Emmanuel Macron, rather than Michel Barnier, in anticipation of the French president’s speech at 9pm tonight.

A similar choice from Le Parisien, which focuses on the “great political uncertainty” for France, asking the question “who will be the next prime minister?”

Finally, La Croix uses the term “a losing bet” for Mr Barnier, adding that “France faces the risk of destabilisation”.
