NATO: Rutte to meet Zelensky and European Leaders on Wednesday in Brussels

The main goal of NATO allies and Ukraine is coordination ahead of Trump's presidential duties in the US

Newsroom December 16 02:27

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte will host Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several European leaders this Wednesday in Brussels, the alliance announced today, just weeks before the newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump takes office.

“The Secretary General will meet with President Zelensky on Wednesday. Other European leaders will be in Brussels for the European summit, and some of them will participate in the meeting to discuss support for Ukraine, particularly in the area of air defense,” said a NATO official.

French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are expected to attend this informal summit, according to diplomatic sources.

Antonio Costa, who is presiding over the European Council of the 27 EU member states, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are also expected to attend the meeting, which will take place one month before Trump’s inauguration in the U.S.

European leaders and the Ukrainian president are concerned about the possibility of the suspension of U.S. military aid to Ukraine, which is at war with Russia. Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that he intends to bring peace to Ukraine, promising to do so “in 24 hours,” but without ever clarifying how.

Kyiv fears, in this context, that it may be forced to negotiate an agreement where its claims regarding sovereignty and security guarantees would not be considered.

European countries, including France and Germany, have begun discussions about sending troops to Ukraine to guarantee a possible future ceasefire. However, they primarily insist on the need to support Ukraine now so that it is in a position of strength before any potential negotiations.

“There must be peace to send peacekeeping forces, and Russia does not want peace,” emphasized the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, today, calling for increased military support for Kyiv.
