Serbians celebrate Christmas today – Aleksandar Vučić visits Mount Athos

Patriarch Porfirije's Christmas message spreads a call for peace and love, while the Serbian President celebrates at Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos

Newsroom January 7 12:30

The Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) celebrates Christmas today, following the old Julian calendar.

In his Christmas message, Serbian Patriarch Porfirije wished peace and love to the entire world, making a special reference to Serbs in Kosovo, who, he said, are being tested in their efforts to preserve their national identity and faith.

President Aleksandar Vučić is celebrating Christmas at Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos. “In a world that has always carried a heavy burden of injustice, suffering, doubt, hatred, and conflict, sincere and passionate faith in justice, peace, and love remains our steadfast support, a beacon of hope, and a focal point for our highest values,” Vučić wrote in a message posted online. He also shared photos and videos from his visit to the Serbian monastery on Mount Athos.

According to tradition, Christmas in Serbia is celebrated in a family setting. On Christmas Eve, the head of the household brings home an oak branch, which is burned in the fireplace at night while children poke the fire to create sparks symbolizing prosperity, health, and happiness. In urban areas, oak branches are burned in front of Orthodox churches. On Christmas Day, before the festive meal, a special bread containing a coin is cut, and whoever finds the coin is considered lucky for the coming year.

Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia also celebrated Christmas.
