Italian Tourism Minister Daniela Santanchè to Stand Trial Amid Calls for Resignation

The Italian judiciary has decided to bring Daniela Santanchè, the Minister of Tourism in Giorgia Meloni’s government and a senator for the “Brothers of Italy” party, to trial. She faces charges of falsifying the balance sheet of Vizibilia, a publishing group she founded. The first court hearing is scheduled for March 20 in Milan.

Opposition Demands Immediate Resignation

Following the announcement of Santanchè’s indictment, the center-left opposition swiftly called for her resignation. Democratic Party Secretary Elly Schlein criticized Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s previous stance on similar cases:

“Just a week ago, Giorgia Meloni said she would wait for the court’s decision. Now that the decision has been made, she cannot act as if nothing has happened. When she was in opposition, she demanded resignations over much less serious issues. Will she now reverse her position on this case?”

Former Prime Minister and Five Star Movement leader Giuseppe Conte echoed these demands, stating:

Uncertainty Surrounding Santanchè’s Future

Prime Minister Meloni has yet to comment on the situation, leaving uncertainty about the minister’s future. However, political analysts suggest it is increasingly likely that Santanchè will be replaced in the near term to prevent further damage to the government’s reputation.

This development has added pressure on the Meloni administration, as the case highlights tensions between its pledges of accountability and the realities of governing amidst allegations against high-ranking officials.
