The President of Congo speaks of a deteriorating situation and criticises the inaction of the international community

Felix Chisekedi also condemned the attacks on embassies of various countries in Kinshasa and assured that a "strong" military response is underway

Newsroom January 30 10:00

The president of LDC spoke last Wednesday night, in a televised address to citizens, of an “unprecedented deterioration of the security situation” in the eastern part of the country, where fighters have almost entirely taken over the town of Goma from the armed anti-government M23 movement and the army of neighbouring Rwanda.

“The eastern part of our country, especially the provinces of North Kivu, South Kivu and Ituri, are facing an unprecedented deterioration of the security situation,” Felix Cisekedi stressed in his address.

At the same time, he denounced the international community’s “inaction” regarding the rapid developments in the conflict in the eastern part of his country and warned against the risk of regional “escalation.”

“Your silence and your inaction (…) are hubris” for DR Congo as extreme violence during the advance of the armed anti-government M23 movement backed by the Rwandan army raise the risk of “escalation” in the Great Lakes region, Felix Tshisekedi, said in a televised address.

The DR Congo president also condemned attacks on embassies of several countries in Kinshasa, the country’s capital, by angry protesters, as foreign governments were accused of doing nothing amid a rapid escalation of the conflict in the east of the country.
