Thessaloniki: Bride’s mother and grandmother beat up hairdresser over wedding hairstyle

The two women threatened to burn down the salon – They were sentenced to suspended prison terms for bodily harm, threats, insults, and defamation

Newsroom January 31 05:10

Fury, threats, and… legal trouble erupted over a bridal hairstyle at a well-known salon in Thessaloniki, when the bride’s mother and grandmother stormed in, raging, and started attacking the staff in front of shocked customers.

The incident, which took place during the pandemic, was heard today at the Thessaloniki Misdemeanor Court. The two defendants, mother and grandmother, were found guilty of bodily harm, threats, insults, and defamation. The court recognized their previously clean criminal record and handed down suspended prison sentences of eight and five months, respectively.

How It All Started

According to the indictment, everything began when the bride-to-be visited a well-known salon in Thessaloniki and was unhappy with her hairstyle and hair color.

Although she did not voice any complaints at the time, a few days later she called the salon and, among other things, demanded a refund of the €50 deposit she had paid for the bridal styling.

The salon staff explained that refunds were not possible since the appointment date had been reserved, but they offered to fix whatever she didn’t like. The bride refused and politely ended the call.

“They Threatened to Burn Down the Salon,” Says the Owner

As it turned out, that was just the beginning. A few days later, the bride’s mother started calling the salon daily, demanding a refund. When she realized she wouldn’t get her money back, the threats and insults began.

“She told us that if we didn’t return the deposit, she would burn down the shop, send people to beat us up—she was shouting, screaming, and swearing at us,” the salon owner testified, adding that this went on for several days.

Things spiraled completely out of control when the bride’s mother and grandmother stormed into the salon, clutching clumps of hair in their hands. According to the victims’ testimony, they punched and slapped an employee before dragging her to the floor by her hair.

They Beat the Employee with Punches and Slaps

“It was during the lockdown, and we were following all the safety measures—keeping distances, limiting the number of customers inside, etc. So, when they arrived, I asked them to speak outside. Instead, they barged in aggressively, and I tried to remove them peacefully. That’s when they attacked my employee in front of the customers. They slapped her, grabbed her by the hair—I was trying to hold their hands back. They only left when we called the police,” the owner recounted.

The employee who was attacked testified in court that she was punched and slapped while being verbally abused and threatened. She also noted that the entire incident was recorded by the salon’s security cameras.

It’s worth mentioning that, as part of the case, the salon owner and the assaulted employee also faced charges after the bride’s mother and grandmother filed a counter-complaint against them. However, the court dismissed the charges and found them not guilty.
