Earthquakes in Santorini: Hellenic Red Cross sends rescuers and psychologists to Amorgos

The large team from the Red Cross will arrive on the island in the early hours of Tuesday

Newsroom February 10 04:44

A multi-member team of volunteer Samaritan Rescuers from the special Search and Rescue Unit, as well as a team of Social Workers and Psychologists, is being sent to Amorgos by the Hellenic Red Cross (HRC) to support the island’s residents.

In the early hours of Tuesday, the HRC teams will disembark on the island with rescue vehicles and operational equipment (cutting tools, rescue ropes, etc.), and in coordination with local authorities, they will offer their services wherever needed.

The Social Workers and Psychologists of the HRC, with the assistance of volunteers from the Social Welfare Unit, will provide psychosocial support and assistance to the island’s residents, who are struggling emotionally due to the successive seismic tremors. They will focus particularly on elderly people living alone, individuals with chronic illnesses, young people, and children.

It is worth noting that Hellenic Red Cross teams have been present in Santorini since Friday. The HRC social workers and psychologists have been stationed at the Community Center of the Municipality of Thira in Mesaria since Monday, February 10, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. In the afternoon hours, the team conducts home visits to individuals in need of psychological support in all the island’s villages.
