Ministry of Foreign Affairs responds to corvette incident near Crete: “We are not naïve to believe Turkey”

Greek diplomatic sources have commented on the recent Turkish naval presence north of Heraklion, Crete, where a Turkish corvette has been monitoring the cable-laying operations

Newsroom February 11 10:52

Turkey will continue to assert claims where there is no officially delineated maritime zone, they emphasize. Greece will proceed with its Maritime Spatial Planning and Marine Parks, despite Turkish opposition. The Athens Security Summit (ASS) in Ankara is still being planned but will take place after the Cyprus Conference in Geneva on March 17-18.

Greek Stance on Turkey & Cyprus

“We are neighbors with Turkey, and we must develop good relations—but we are not naïve to think that Turkey will suddenly abandon positions it has held for 30 years,” a diplomatic source stated.

Regarding Cyprus, Greece maintains that discussions must align with UN Security Council decisions, rejecting any notion of a two-state solution or sovereign equality.

Strategic and Regional Diplomacy

Greece is strengthening ties in the Middle East, India, and Syria.
Supports lifting sanctions on Syria, but only under strict conditions (e.g., minority rights & adherence to international law).
Warns against any illegal maritime demarcation between Turkey and Syria, which would provoke a response not just from Greece & Cyprus, but also from the EU.
