USAID chief fired after publication of critical report on the dismantling of the agency

The decision was communicated to him the day after publication, US media reports

Newsroom February 12 02:23

The head of the US international aid agency USAID has been fired in the US by the government shortly after the release of a report on the” consequences of its dismantling”, several US media outlets are reporting today.

Paul Martin received an email yesterday, Tuesday, from a member of the White House informing him that “on behalf of the president Donald Trump (…) your role as Inspector General for the U.S. Agency for International Development is terminated, effective immediately,” according to the U.S. Washington Post.

His decision was announced the day after his agencies published an article on the consequences of the USAID dismantling decided by Donald Trump, and after the US president fired more than ten inspectors general of various agencies since taking office in late January.

The US government intends to fire nearly 90% of the roughly 10,000 employees of that agency, but the judiciary has currently suspended the plan to remove them.

This agency manages a budget of $42.8 billion. Donald Trump intends to end the problems of fraud, waste, abuse of many US government agencies, and accuses USAID of embezzlement, saying corruption in that agency is at “unprecedented levels”.
