Severe weather warnings issued for Western Greece, including Kefalonia

Weekend weather warning: New storms expected - Argostoli Mayor requests state of emergency

Newsroom February 15 08:47

Severe Weather Alert: Storms and Flooding in Kefalonia, More to Come

Today and tomorrow, unstable weather is expected across much of Greece, with heavy rainfall forecast for the western regions. The Hellenic National Meteorological Service (EMY) has issued warnings, with Director Thodoros Kolydas forecasting more intense storms. He warns that further emergency bulletins may be issued if conditions worsen.

Kefalonia, hit by severe weather, has experienced flooding, landslides, and mud-covered villages. Roads were submerged, and some areas were cut off. Kolydas pointed out significant discrepancies between rainfall forecasts and actual levels, citing 93mm recorded on Thursday when only 70mm was predicted, escalating the situation. The storms continued into Friday, with rainfall reaching 81mm—again exceeding predictions.

Meteorologist Giorgos Tsatrafillias warned that from Saturday night through Sunday, Western Greece will see powerful storms, bringing heavy rain and potential hail. The storms will spread to the Ionian, Peloponnese, and Central Greece.

Kefalonia’s Devastation Heavy rainfall caused significant damage across southern Kefalonia, particularly in the Livato area. In the village of Peratata, streams overflowed, flooding homes and roads. The mayor of Argostoli, Theophilos Michalatos, has requested the municipality be re-declared a state of emergency. Parts of the island’s infrastructure were damaged, with roads turned into rivers and access to beaches cut off.

Weather Forecast On Thursday, rain and thunderstorms will impact the Ionian, Central Greece, Peloponnese, and Crete, with potential hail in certain coastal regions. Winds will be strong in the Aegean, and dust levels will increase, bringing muddy showers in places. Temperatures will range from 0°C in the north to 17°C in parts of the south. In Attica, occasional rain is expected, with limited visibility due to dust.

On Sunday, February 16: Expect rain and thunderstorms across western and central regions. Light snow is forecast for northern mountains. Winds will shift from southeast to northeast, and temperatures will range from 11°C to 17°C.

Monday, February 17: Heavy rain will intensify in northern Greece, with snow in the mountains. Winds will range from 3 to 5 Beaufort, and temperatures will drop slightly in the northeast.
