CYPA: 981,374 registered unemployed in January – Down by 5.6% in one year

By 58,101 persons decreased compared to January 2024 - The 30-44 age group has the largest number of registered unemployed

The total number of registered unemployed people on the Public Employment Service (PES) register stood at 981,374 in January 2025, recording a decrease of 58.101 persons (-5.6%) compared to the same month in January 2024 and an increase of 3,687 persons (0.4%) compared to the previous month of December 2024.

According to the registered unemployment statistics of the Public Employment Service (PES), of the total of 981,374 persons, 458,536 persons (46.7%) are registered with the PES for 12 months or more and 522,838 persons (53.3%) are registered with the PES for less than 12 months.

Men totaled 354,174 persons (36.1%) and women totaled 627,200 persons (63.9%).

The 30-44 age group had the largest number of registered unemployed among the age categories, which amounted to 309,233 persons (31.5%).

The educational level of secondary education, which includes post-secondary education, had the largest number of registered unemployed among the educational levels, which amounted to 473,267 persons (48.2%).

Among the regions of the country, the Region of Attica and the Region of Central Macedonia recorded the largest number of registered unemployed, which amounted to 290,689 persons (29.6%) and 181,976 persons (18.5%) respectively.

In January 2025, the total number of subsidized unemployed, (refers to the number of beneficiaries paid within the respective month), amounted to 276,786 persons, of which 124,458 (45%) are common unemployed and other categories of subsidized unemployed and 152,328 (55%) are seasonal tourism workers.

Specifically, in January 2025, the number of subsidized unemployed persons amounted to 276,786 persons, an increase of 64,798 persons (30.6%) compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, January 2024, and an increase of 14,238 persons (5.4%) compared to the previous month, December 2024.

Men totaled 118,890 (43%) and women totaled 157,896 (57%).

Of the total subsidized unemployed, 108,828 (39.3%) are commoners, 2,137 (0.8%) are builders, 152,328 (55%) are seasonal tourism workers, 12,431 (4.5%) are seasonal other (agricultural), 980 (0.4%) are teachers and 82 (0.0%) are other.
