More than 150,000 citizens call for Elon Musk to be stripped of his Canadian citizenship

The billionaire has been granted Canadian citizenship by his mother - Thousands signed the petition to take the issue to the House of Commons

Newsroom February 24 08:00

More than 150,000 Canadians have signed a parliamentary petition asking the country to remove the Canadian citizenship from Elon Musk.

Citizens are calling for the billionaire to be stripped of his citizenship because of his alliance with Donald Trump, who has repeatedly expressed his desire to make Canada the 51st state of the US.

The author, Qualia Reid, started the petition in the House of Commons, where she was supported by New Democratic Party MP and avowed Musk critic Charlie Angus.

South African-born and head of Tesla, Space X, and Twitter Elon Musk has Canadian citizenship from his mother, who is originally from Regina.

Reid’s petition, filed on Feb. 20, accuses Musk of “engaging in activities directed against Canada’s national interest” as an adviser to Trump. The new U.S. president has caused a backlash among Canadian residents due to threats of tariffs and statements about annexing the country to the U.S.

The petition argues that Musk’s alignment with Trump makes him “part of a foreign government trying to eliminate Canadian sovereignty”. It calls on Justin Trudeau to remove Musk’s Canadian passport and revoke his citizenship. Trump has often mocked Trudeau by calling him “governor”, the title given to the heads of US states.

Canada’s House of Commons is expected to resume its proceedings on March 24, although the country could call a general election before members of parliament return.
