Voridis: Withdraws extensions of deadlines for granting residence permits to migrants

First sign of the Immigration Minister announcing tightening of the framework - If there is ultimately a need for an extension, "it will have to be linked to restrictive policies", he told Parliament

Newsroom March 19 07:30

Makis Voridis Makis Voridis withdrew a legislative provision on extending deadlines for granting a new type of residence permit to migrants in Parliament, officially launching the tightening of the framework of immigration policy.

The regulations had been submitted by the previous leadership of theMinistry of Immigration and Asylum in a multi-bill being discussed in the Parliament’s Committee on Public Administration, Public Order and Justice.

The new Minister of Immigration, intervening in the drafting of the bill, informed MPs that he was deleting the paragraph that provided for an extension until 30/9 for the granting of a new type of residence permit as he said he wanted to examine whether it was in line with more restrictive policies he wished to introduce.

“We are deleting it because I want to consider whether there is indeed a need for such an extension, and in any case, this extension, if I ultimately decide to grant it, should be linked to more restrictive policies to deal with illegal immigration from now on. Therefore, it will come in combination, if I ultimately decide to bring it, in order to align it with our overall policy to deal with illegal immigration,” he said.

Voridis also noted that the arrangements for the land worker recruitment process would be extended.
