Childhood innocence, a selling point in rightist ad campaigns (videos)

From little Alexis derailing the train and getting help by ANEL leader P. Kammenos to teen Nicholas kicking the ball at the PM's feet

Newsroom January 14 09:47

The first ad campaigns are out for rightist parties, with conservative political leaders using children to get their point across. Cynics, of course, say that only a child would believe them.

ANEL’s spot

The pre-election TV spot for the anti-austerity right-wing Independent Greeks (ANEL) feature the party’s leader Panos Kammenos playing with a little boy, known as “little Alexis”, no doubt symbolizing Radical Left Coalition (SYRIZA) leader Alexis Tsipras in his youth.

The advertisement shows the little boy derailing his toy train and Mr. Kammenos giving him advice as to how to keep on track. “When you’re a driver you need to always check the speed. Now we run, now we stop,” he says.

The little boy tells him that he is “good” and Mr. Kammenos responds by saying that he is “necessary”, playing with the party’s slogan “Necessary Good”, as opposed to “Necessary evil”.

The mother comes at the end and yanks him away stating, “Alexis! Alexis come on… get off it!”

ND TV spot

The conservative New Democracy campaign spot also uses children with conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras being accidentally hit by a football. The teenager goes to get the ball and instead of running off to continue the game says, “Let me tell you something. My father tells me that things are difficult.” His teammates rush and eagerly listen to Mr. Samaras telling young Nicholas and his friends about the political situation.

The ND spot has already been trolled by many:
