Major problems across Crete due to severe weather – 112 Alert Issued – Watch videos and see photos

The wave of severe weather continues across the eastern Aegean islands, particularly affecting Crete.

The greatest issues have been reported in Chania. According to zarpanews.gr, streets in Tsikalaria, Souda, Vamvakopoulo, and even in the city center of Chania have been flooded, with the fire department receiving numerous emergency calls.

There have also been cases of people being rescued from vehicles as floodwaters rose so high they were unable to exit safely.

Authorities remain on high alert as the storm, which began causing serious disruption in several parts of the country from Monday afternoon, continues to affect regions like the Cyclades and Evia.

New Emergency Bulletin from the National Weather Service

The Emergency Weather Warning issued on Sunday (March 30, 2025) was updated shortly after 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, based on the latest forecast data.

The updates mainly concern Crete, while parts of western Central Macedonia will also be temporarily affected.

Heavy rainfall and thunderstorms (accompanied by strong winds and possible hail) are expected to occur intermittently through Wednesday afternoon (April 2, 2025).

Detailed forecast:

A. Cyclades, eastern Central Greece, Evia, and the Sporades: until midday Tuesday (April 1)
B. Eastern Thessaly and western Central Macedonia (Pieria, Imathia, Pella): until Tuesday afternoon
C. Eastern Aegean Islands (especially Chios, Ikaria, Samos): until Tuesday night
D. Crete (mainly western and southern parts) and Gavdos: until Wednesday morning
E. Dodecanese: until midday Wednesday

Ziakopoulos’ Forecast through Friday

Meteorologist Dimitris Ziakopoulos forecasts rain and localized thunderstorms across most of the country on Tuesday.

Severe weather is expected in parts of Thessaly, Evia, and the Aegean. In the morning, strong southeast winds will prevail in the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese, with a slight drop in maximum temperatures.

On Wednesday (April 2), unstable weather will persist with rain and local storms, mainly in eastern and southern Greece. Winds are not expected to exceed 6 on the Beaufort scale, and temperatures will remain largely unchanged.

112 Alert for Crete

On Tuesday morning, a 112 emergency alert was issued in Crete stating:
“Severe weather phenomena in parts of Crete from now until the morning of 02/04/2025. Caution advised when traveling. Follow instructions from authorities.”
