ELSTAT: 26.9% of Greece’s population at risk of poverty – 0.8% increase in 2024

In which areas of the country the highest rates are recorded and in which areas the lowest rates are recorded

Greece‘s population at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2024 (2023 incomes) is 26.9% of the total population (2,740,051 people), an increase of 0.8 percentage points compared to 2023 (26.1%).

According to the household income and living conditions survey by ELSTAT, the increase in the risk of poverty or social exclusion rate (an indicator composed of the sub-indices of poverty risk, material and social deprivation and low work intensity) is due to the increase in the risk of poverty rate to 19.6% in 2024 from 18.9% in 2023 and material and social deprivation to 14% in 2024 from 13.5% in 2023.

The risk of poverty or social exclusion is highest for children aged 17 and under (27.9%), down from 2023 (28.1%).

In two Large Geographical Areas (Attica, Aegean Islands and Crete), the risk of poverty or social exclusion is lower than in the country as a whole, while in the other two Large Geographical Areas (Northern Greece, Central Greece) the corresponding rates are higher.

The at-risk-of-poverty or social exclusion rate for households with one adult and at least one dependent child is 43.7%, while for households with dependent children it is 28.9% and for households without dependent children it is 20.6%.

The population at risk of poverty or social exclusion living in owner-occupied housing with financial obligations amounts to 22%, in owner-occupied housing without financial obligations to 24.6%, and in rented housing to 32.2%.

The poverty threshold is €6,510 per year for a single person household and €13,671 for households with two adults and two dependent children under the age of 14. The poverty threshold is set at 60% of the median total equivalent disposable income of households, which was estimated at €10,850, while the average annual disposable income of households in the country was estimated at €20,103.

In 2024, 19.6% of the country’s total population was at risk of poverty after social transfers, an increase of 0.7 percentage points compared to the previous year.

Households at risk of poverty were estimated at 842,421 out of a total of 4,298,067 households and their members at 1,996,833 out of the estimated 10,187,923 persons in the country’s estimated population living in private households.
