NYTimes: SYRIZA displeasure with all-inclusive holiday packages

It aims to boost local economies and businesses

Newsroom January 23 01:15

A New York Times article paints a slightly more ominous picture for the Greek tourism sector in 2015 should leftist SYRIZA confirm opinion poll predictions and win Sunday’s election.

The respected international daily pinpoints a repeated theme in SYRIZA’s pre-election statements on the tourism sector, warning that the left-wing party may pressure hoteliers to reduce all-inclusive holiday offers.

Many foreign tour operators close, at very competitive prices for clients, deals that include travel expenses, hotel stay, meals, drinks, snacks, excursions and entertainment.

These all-inclusive offers may be on the leftist party “radar”, ostensibly part of a more “class conscious” attempt to boost revenue for local mom-and-pop businesses (your assorted tavernas, snack shops, cafes, bars etc.) outside an all-inclusive resort’s gates.

SYRIZA’s tourism sector spokesperson Mihalis Kritsotakis has previously stated that all-inclusive offers are not that lucrative for Greek tourism, although he’s admitted that they cannot be cancelled outright.

On their part, tourism sector chambers of commerce in the country and major resorts are adamantly oppose any state “tinkering” with what’s essentially Greece’s only rising economic sector.
