As every year, this Sunday marked the beginning of the Pilgrimage Route to Saint John the Russian, which is being organized for the 10th consecutive year by the Region of Central Greece.

Less alcohol and lower speeds with the new Highway Code and strict fines

More than 2,000 people are following the alternative 20-kilometer route to the pilgrimage site. The hike started again on Sunday from the location “Agios” leading to the Holy Church of Saint John the Russian, through a pine forest of rare beauty, along a specially designed and marked trail located east of the Psachna–Prokopi national road. Throughout these days and until May 27th, when Saint John the Russian is celebrated, thousands of pilgrims make their way on foot to the holy church.

The Deputy Regional Governor of Euboea, Giorgos Kelaiditis, spoke to SKAI, saying:

“It is a very beautiful initiative that has been taking place in recent years by the Region of Central Greece. We started this in the context of the thousands of pilgrims who visit these days for the celebration of Saint John the Russian on May 27. So we decided to offer an alternative for people, and instead of walking along the usual route on the main road, we created a trail in collaboration with the Mountaineering Club — an 18-kilometer route that more and more of our friends follow every year through a stunning pine forest. Truly, this is an effort supported by many volunteer organizations.“
