Tragedy in Trikala: Funeral today for 30-year-old who drowned in Lefkada – Dramatic video of the fatal struggle with the waves at Kathisma

The city of Trikala mourns the loss of Stefanos Kemos, the 30-year-old man who was swept away by the waves and drowned in Lefkada, where he was visiting with friends for his bachelor party

Newsroom May 27 07:53

Today, at noon, in Sotiros Trikalon, where his family resides, his parents, Kostas and Daphne Kemos, along with his sister, his fiancée—who was to marry him in a few days—and many friends and relatives will say their final farewell to their beloved Stefanos.

No one could have imagined that the joy of seeing their son get married to his bride would suddenly turn into tragedy, leading them to accompany him on his final journey.

How the Fatal Incident Occurred

The young man had been planning a trip with his friends to celebrate his bachelor party. He chose Lefkada to enjoy carefree moments with loved ones, but unfortunately, fate had different plans.

On Sunday, the Coast Guard issued a warning for strong winds and dangerous sea conditions. At Kathisma Beach in Lefkada, despite the presence of sunbeds and visitors, no lifeguard was on duty, as the municipality, according to regulations, is required to deploy three lifeguards from June 1 to September 30.

Despite the rough sea, Stefanos decided to swim. Witnesses present at the beach, who attempted to help him, reported that “people were shouting, ‘Don’t tire yourself, try to stay calm.'” A nearby individual tried to rescue him within a meter, but suddenly, a large wave pushed him away. “At that moment, he was alive, trying to swim outward as best as he could. We kept shouting at him to stay calm,” said another witness.

The fiancée of the 30-year-old learned the tragic news while in Kythnos, where she was with her friends for her bachelorette party. Her sister was with her, and the subsequent moments when the news spread resembled an ancient tragedy.

Meanwhile, Stefanos’s parents were at home in Trikala, preparing for his wedding scheduled for June 14 in Messolonghi. All the details for his wedding with his beloved Martha had already been arranged, with the reception planned at a hotel in Messolonghi, exclusively reserved for the couple’s guests from Trikala.
