Personal Number: Its functionality, and implementation timeline

The Personal Identification Number "key" for transactions with the Public Sector - How citizens will acquire it

Newsroom May 27 11:00

The Personal Number is set to revolutionize administrative procedures by significantly reducing bureaucracy and facilitating seamless interactions between citizens and the public sector. Anticipated to launch via the gov.gr platform’s myInfo application in early June, each individual will be assigned a unique Personal Number that will accompany them throughout their lifetime.

Overview of the Personal Number

This identification tool offers citizens a singular, lifelong reference number for all dealings with government authorities. It will be a fixed 12-digit number, with the first nine digits corresponding to the individual’s VAT number, while the remaining three digits will be prefixed and customizable by the citizen, with two of these digits selected personally.

Key Features

– Mandatory Identification: The issuance of the Personal Number will be compulsory for all natural persons eligible for ATM or AMKA, serving as a primary means of verifying identity in public sector transactions.
– Uniqueness and Permanence: The number is designed to be unique and unchanging, providing a consistent identity marker over the course of a citizen’s life.
– Complementary Role: While existing registers, such as TIN, AMKA, and others, remain in place, the Personal Number will act as a foundational identifier, streamlining and unifying various processes.

Procedure via the myInfo Platform

Citizens will be able to obtain their Number through the myInfo.gov.gr portal by reviewing and confirming their personal details and existing identifiers. Users will have the opportunity to correct any inaccuracies, such as misspelled names, before finalizing their registration. Subsequently, they will select two digits from the three available to complete their Number, which will then be issued.

Next Steps: Integration into the Digital Identity

The Personal Number will be incorporated into the new digital citizen identity, enhancing interoperability across services. While existing registers will continue to operate, the Personal Number will serve as the core element within the modernized public sector framework, linked seamlessly to the Digital ID.

Initially targeting the public sector, the system’s scope will gradually extend to the private sector, aiming to eliminate the need for physical identification documents such as photocopies of IDs. Citizens will be able to access and manage their Personal Number directly through Gov.gr.

Addressing Data Integrity

In addition, the implementation of the Personal Number will facilitate the correction of discrepancies across various state registers—including the Citizens’ Register maintained by the Ministry of Interior, the Tax Register of AADE, the National AMKA-EMAES Register, the Identity Card Register managed by EL.AS., and the National Communication Register—contributing to more accurate and integrated data management across government agencies.
