The 5.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Saturday afternoon on Mount Athos is causing concern in the scientific community.

According to the revised solution of the Geodynamic Institute, the quake had a focal depth of 12.5 kilometers, with the epicenter located nine kilometers west-northwest of Karyes.

The earthquake of magnitude 5.3, which occurred earlier on Saturday afternoon (7/6) in Mount Athos and shook several areas in Northern Greece, was discussed by the president of the OASP, Efthimios Lekkas, on ERTNews.

According to what he said, the reappearance of seismic activity in a fault, which experts had estimated had been relieved last year, is finally coming back with a stronger tremor, raising a concerns.

Papazachos on the 5.3-magnitude tremor on Mount Athos: “We will have intense seismic activity in the coming hours.”

According to Kostas Papazakhos, professor of seismology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, who spoke to Voria.gr, this is a classic surface earthquake that occurred in an area near the Monastery of Docheiariou.

“It is in the same place where we have been following for many months. We have the same microseismic sequence, and now it has given an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3,” Papazachos said.

According to him, no major damage has been recorded since the first reports in monasteries, such as the Xenophontos Monastery and Karyes.
