Lamia: Deputy Mayor Kostas Stavrogiannis dead in a traffic accident – His wife is in critical condition

Shocked eyewitnesses and his colleagues in the Municipality

Newsroom June 22 09:43

The local community of Lamia has been plunged into deep mourning since the early hours of Sunday morning, following the tragic death of Deputy Mayor Kostas Stavrogiannis in a horrific road accident on the new ring road of Profitis Ilias, just before the exit to the hospital, at 05:40 in the morning.

The vehicle in which the 64-year-old Deputy Mayor was a passenger, a Renault driven by his 54-year-old wife Yiota Koumbarou, collided head-on with a Mercedes, driven by a 34-year-old well-known local professional, heading towards KEPP.

Kostas Stavrogiannis was pulled out of the collision dead, while his wife was seriously injured and was immediately transferred to Lamia Hospital. The driver of the Mercedes suffered minor injuries.

It is worth noting that the Deputy Mayor Dimitris Kiritsis was following in his own vehicle, who rushed first to the spot and tried to help, along with other passing drivers, until the fire trucks and ambulances arrived and attempted to extricate the occupants.

Tragic coincidence: among the policemen who rushed to the scene was the victim’s brother, who was on duty at the Lamia Traffic Police at the time.

The Mayor of Lamia, Panourgias Papaioannou, went to the hospital immediately, obviously devastated by the news. In his statements to LamiaReport he said: “A short while ago we were together. We were laughing, joking. I can’t believe it. The municipality is mourning. Kostas was a man whose name is identified with the Municipality of Lamia. Our thoughts and our anguish now are with his family and first and foremost with his beloved wife Giota.”

The news of the death of Kostas Stavrogiannis has shocked the local community, as he was a much loved person with a long career in local government. Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
